Yarra Valley Singers – Elizabeth Maile Memorial Scholarship

The Elizabeth Maile Memorial Scholarship

Yarra Valley Singers Inc. is establishing an annual vocal scholarship in the choir’s 30th year in honour of the group’s founder, Elizabeth Maile.  Elizabeth had boundless energy, love for the Yarra Valley Singers and love for life in general, and this scholarship is intended to carry her enthusiasm forward in memory of her contribution to the community.

Yarra Valley Singers Inc. is an unauditioned community choir, presenting 4-5 major concerts a year as well as performances at Citizenship ceremonies and in aged care facilities. The range of music performed by the choir covers a broad spectrum: contemporary, popular, musical comedy, ballads and folk songs and also opera, classical and sacred choral music.

The scholarship is an encouragement award intended to assist a singer who wishes to pursue a career in singing, performing, teaching and/or conducting.   Applicants must be 18 or over on 1 January 2020.

Applications will open soon for 2020.

The scholarship entitles the recipient to a contribution of $1,000 towards tuition fees for one year, paid to the recipient on meeting the “Conditions of Appointment” whilst making an active contribution to the choir and continuing their music studies.  Payments will be made quarterly in arrears.  Membership of Yarra Valley Singers is also included, currently valued at $320 for one year.  The successful applicant will be expected to rehearse with the Yarra Valley Singers on Wednesday evenings and perform at Yarra Valley Singers concerts throughout the duration of the scholarship.

Should the recipient cease tuition, the scholarship will become void from the date of the last lesson.  The scholarship is not transferable and Yarra Valley Singers will retain the remaining scholarship payments.  It will be the responsibility of the scholar to notify Yarra Valley Singers of any such decision.  The Committee of Yarra Valley Singers reserves the right to terminate the scholarship should circumstances arise to warrant such action.

All applications will be considered and responded to. Those chosen for audition and interview will be notified and will be required to appear before a Selection Panel to sing two songs, preferably of different styles.  The applicant will be accompanied by the Yarra Valley Singers’ accompanist.

The Selection Panel will consist of at least four people and include the Yarra Valley Singers’ Musical Director.  The decision of the Selection Panel will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.  Yarra Valley Singers reserves the right not to audition all applicants and not to award the scholarship if they consider there is no suitable applicant.

Applications for the 2020 scholarship closed on 18th October 2019.

Yarra Valley Singers – Elizabeth Maile Memorial Scholarship

Conditions of Appointment

Yarra Valley Singers Inc awards an annual vocal scholarship valued at $1,000 as a contribution towards the winner’s singing lessons, plus membership of the choir currently valued at an additional $320 and mentoring by the Yarra Valley Singers’ Musical Director.

A shortlist of applicants will be advised early November and auditions will take place on the 23rd November 2019.  The scholarship winner will be announced at the Yarra Valley Singers Christmas concert in December 2019 and the scholarship will commence from February 1st 2020

Quarterly payments of the scholarship over the following 12 months depend on the scholar meeting the following obligations.

1.         The recipient will perform as a member of the choir and as a soloist at the concerts nominated by the Musical Director in early 2020.  Choir rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening between 7.30pm and 9.30pm at the Senior Citizens Hall, 7 Hardy St, Lilydale.  The minimal attendance required is 75% of rehearsals unless exceptional circumstances can be demonstrated e.g. interstate or overseas travel for additional musical study or performance.

2.         The choice of repertoire will be developed in collaboration with the Musical Director.

3.         It is essential that the recipient presents in appropriate concert attire for all performances.  Advice will be available from the Musical Director.

4.         An original copy of the music for all solo works is to be provided to the Yarra Valley Singers accompanist at least four weeks before concerts.

5.         As the presentation of concerts involves the preparation and distribution of publicity material, inability to perform (except in circumstances beyond control) must be advised to the Musical Director at least six weeks prior to the concert.

6.         Any late cancellation, other than stated above, may see funds drawn from the scholarship fund to cover the cost of a replacement soloist.

7.         The recipient will be required to provide evidence of private singing lessons through receipts for tuition received.

I have read and accept these conditions.
